How to Choose the Right Toy Storage and Display Shelf for Your Child?
P
eople often tell me that stepping into our house, they can’t believe we have two kids—the space is always neat and well-organized!
Since my children were born, I’ve been researching the best ways to store toys and educational materials. The goal is twofold: to encourage kids to take out and play with their toys independently, and to maintain order in the home.
Over the years, I have tried IKEA Kallax (4-cube and 8-cube shelves), small open bookshelves, rotating bookshelves, IKEA Trofast, IKEA Billy, and various open toy shelves.
Here’s my guide to selecting the best toy storage solutions for different age groups!
🌟
Ages 0-1.5 years
At this stage, babies focus on crawling and learning to walk. I recommend using the IKEA Kallax 4-cube shelf, which can later expand to an 8-cube version. Start with four toy options and gradually increase to eight, but avoid overcrowding. Babies play with one toy at a time, so a small selection keeps them engaged. If they get bored, rotate in new toys.
Some great open-ended toys for this age include Moluk Oogi.
🌟
Ages 1.5-3 years
At this stage, children can walk and have better hand coordination but might not naturally seek out toys to play with. An open toy shelf helps them visually identify what’s available, unlike the fixed-size compartments of the IKEA 8-cube shelf, which may not fit all toys.
Since toddlers also start enjoying books, opt for a small open bookshelf that’s slightly taller than them, making books easy to reach. Keep the play area spacious, as kids at this age love to run, jump, and explore.
🌟
Ages 3-5 years
By now, kids enjoy mixing different toys in creative play. A Trofast storage system with drawers is ideal for sorting smaller toys like building blocks, magnetic tiles, and Duplo. Add shelves for displaying frequently used toys.
Their growing interest in books makes rotating bookshelves or larger open bookshelves great choices, as visual exposure encourages reading.
🌟
Ages 5+ years
Older preschoolers start using toys in mixed and creative ways. If your home has lots of small figurines, wooden dolls, miniature animals, and diorama pieces, they might go unnoticed if stored in drawers. Instead, consider a narrow wall-mounted toy shelf, which keeps them visible yet organized.
🌟
Ages 7+ years
By the time kids start school, they spend less time playing with toys and more on board games, crafts, and creative projects. A drawer-style toy cabinet paired with a wall-mounted toy rack provides a clean and efficient way to store fewer but more specialized toys.

Bonus: Why I Constantly Rearrange the Playroom?
My husband often asks why I keep rearranging our playroom. The answer is simple: just as toys should be age-appropriate, so should storage solutions! By adjusting our toy shelves periodically, I encourage my kids to fully engage with their toys, ensuring our purchases are worthwhile.
